Hope . . .

In two days 2024 will be a reality. Wow! It seems like only yesterday that we were worried if the world’s computer systems would hold under the uncertainty of a new millennium. 

That said, I doubt that there is one person who — despite what 2023 has dished out — doesn’t hope 2024 is better. That’s what a new year brings, isn’t it? Hope.

— Hope for better international relations
— Hope for better national unity
— Hope for better local economy
— Hope for better personal situations

When we say we “hope” for these things, what we are saying is we wish they will come true. We have no control over whether or not the do, but we certainly want them to become a reality. Our hope is a wish, uncertain but desired.

But when the Bible speaks of hope, it is the confident expectation of what God has promised. And this hope gets its strength is in His constant faithfulness.

So yes, we can “hope” the circumstances in the world and our lives improve this next year. We can pray that this is the will of God.

But more importantly we can have hope—certainty—of the following:

—That God is our protector and our help and his love is constant (Psalm 33:20-22)
—That God hears us (John 5:14; I John 5:15; Jeremiah 29:12-13; Psalm 66:17-20)
—That He will renew our strength when we grow weary with the struggles of life (Isaiah 40:31)
—That He forgives our sins (Psalm 103:10-12; Acts 2:38-39)
—That Christ will return (I Thessalonians 1:10 + 50 more verses)

There are even more “certainties” we can have in God--more reasons we can place our “hope” in Him. 

As 2024 unfolds, I pray that each day will bring you into a deeper relationship with the God of Hope—the God of Certainties.

Christmas . . .

Christmas is just two days away. What is a must for you to experience for your Christmas to be complete?

Is it a walk through the neighborhood, enjoying all the lights? Last minute shopping on Christmas Eve? Watching that favorite Christmas movie? Attending the Christmas Eve Candlelight service?

For me, it is listening to and watching Pentatonic’s video of “Mary Did You Know.” Ever since they released it in November of 2014, it has become one of my Christmas traditions.

For me, no other song encapsulates the complete scope of Jesus’s life, ministry, purpose, and Godhood. 

For me, no other version is as beautiful.

I know you have all heard it, but please enjoy it again, and Merry Christmas!

Apparel . . .

‘Tis the season of gifts—which means ties, sweaters, socks, cozy socks—aka clothes.

While clothes are a necessity, they can also make a statement. A statement of who we want to be?

Do I want to be be stylish? Sporty? A rebel? Meticulous? Casual? Look like a professional golfer? Win the ugly Christmas sweater contest? 

Clothes make the person, asserts one saying that has its roots in ancient Greece.

Then I read the December 7th entry on my Amish perpetual calendar.

Of all the things you wear, your expression is the most important. (Janet Lane)

And this is truer yet, isn’t it? While our clothes might be the first thing we notice about a person, it doesn’t take long for our eyes to move to the individual’s face and note what is there, and that tells us so much more.

Our clothes often show what we want to be, but our expressions reveal who we are.
Bored? Angry? Frustrated? Happy? Contented? Amused?

This Christmas, as you dress up in your holiday wear, take special note of what expression your face is wearing, and remember, a sincere smile might be the nicest gift some person receives this year.

1 Peter 3:3-4: Do not let your adorning be external — but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart . . . .

And that hidden person is often revealed through our expressions.

Science and God . . .

I love it. Once again, science has stepped up and proven the sovereignty of God and the truth of the Bible, which shouldn’t surprise us at all since God created the laws of science. 

​But let me explain. My brother put me onto the Nice News feed that comes via email every day. This news source provides stories about all the good things that are happening in the world. (Let me tell you, it is a wonderful way to start the day.)

In the November 23 edition (Thanksgiving Day,) the Health and Wellness section had the following headline: “The Science of Why Gratitude is Good for You.”

It then cited three studies: One from UCLA about the health benefits of gratitude; one from SpringerLink (“the world’s most comprehensive online collection of scientific, technological and medical journals, books and reference works”) which spoke to gratitude and mental health; and one by Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center about how gratitude actually can change the chemistry of the brain.

But if you read the bible, you already know this. A few of the benefits referred to in the Bible are --

Gratitude engenders trust--

I Thessalonians 5:18:”Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Gratitude brings peace--

Phil. 4:6-7: “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Gratitude brings contentment--

Philippians 4:12-13: I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Gratitude brings perspective--

James 1:2-4: Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Gratitude reminds us of God’s mercy--

As when the sinful woman in Luke 7:36-50 arrived unannounced and anointed Jesus’s feet with expensive perfume, kissed his feet, and wiped them with her hair.

The science of gratitude is just the most recent validation of the truth and wisdom of the Bible, and the sovereignty of God. Let’s see what scientists “discover” next.

Disappointment . . .

I was supposed to be with my sister and mother for Thanksgiving. But now, with Thanksgiving only two days away, it didn’t look like that was going to happen. I was sick, and even if I recovered by tomorrow, I wouldn’t feel strong enough to make the long drive.

Disappointment didn’t even begin to describe what I felt. Not only would I not be with family, but because of illness, I also couldn’t even get together with friends. This was looking to be a terrible Thanksgiving. I started feeling sorry for myself big time.

Okay, so I knew what I was supposed to do. Turn to the Lord.

I knew Proverbs 3:5— Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding . . .

And I knew all the all the sayings that stem from that verse:

“God’s plans will always be more beautiful and greater than all your disappointments.”

"Disappointments are God’s appointments.”

“Expectation is the root of all heartache.”

“When you release expectations, you are free to enjoy things for what they are instead of what you think they should be.”

Right. They weren’t helping.

Then I read this: Disappointment can reveal your true heart. How a person reacts to not getting what he wants tells others if his faith is based on God or on God delivering the goods. And the writer’s examples were Job and David. 

Job lost livestock, servants, family, and health—one right after the other. Disappointment? Despair more likely. But that wasn’t Job’s response. He worshipped. David lost his son despite his prayers and fasting but didn’t blame God or rail against Him. He worshipped.

Yes, I missed out on a day or two with family and friends, but only in person. FaceTime, texts, phone calls —all allowed me to be with those who meant the most to me. And I know that my disappointment was so minor compared to what some people were dealing with this Thanksgiving season. 
​
But my solitary Thanksgiving did serve as a vivid reminder that while the world can dish out disappointments by the shovelful, God will never disappoint. That is definitely worthy of worship.
