Spring . . .

I woke up to the sound of birds this morning and it reminded me of the goodness of God. I love spring and its promise of renewal. Like every season, God has loaded our senses with reminders of His creative powers and His mercies--the sound of the birdsongs (for me, doves, mockingbirds, sparrows, and finches); the beauty of the flowers and their fragrant aromas; the coolness of the breeze. All are reminders that God is the God of renewal.

He can heal the brokenhearted.


The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
    and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)

He can take a broken life and create something new.

So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. (Isaiah 18:3-4)

He can redeem broken people:

Praise the Lord, my soul,
    and forget not all his benefits--
who forgives all your sins
    and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
    and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
    so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. (Psalm 103:2-5)

And while Spring is a reminder of God’s desire and ability to renew, His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23): winter, spring, summer, and fall.
