New Study Shows . . .

Do you get as confused as I do? One day eggs aren't good for you and the next, they are. The same goes for coffee and dark chocolate and a host of other food items.

I know that more research will uncover more truths, but sometimes it’s hard to tell if the shifting opinions coming our way are the result of improved scientific techniques or greedy commercialism. The first will make us healthier, the other poorer in more ways than one. But even the results of the first could change as more information is discovered.

That is why it is a relief and a comfort to know that God never changes . . .

Malachi 3:6a (NKJV): "For I am the LORD, I do not change. . .
Hebrews 13:8 (NIV): "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”.
Psalm 102:27 (ESV): "But you are the same, and your years have no end”.

. . . and that his laws are eternal.

Psalm 119:160: "All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal" (NIV).
Psalm 111:7-8: "The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established for ever and ever, enacted in faithfulness and uprightness" (NIV).

New studies may or may not lead us to healthier lifestyles. They may last or they may be overturned in a year. Food pyramids rotate and flip and may disappear altogether. Changing with each new find can be costly as we empty the refrigerators and pantries of ingredients.

Therefore, it is a comfort to know that while the world strives to find its way to a better future that we have a two constants in our lives: a God who loves us; and his law, statutes, precepts, commands, and decrees that are perfect, refreshing, trustworthy, right, radiant, firm, and more precious than gold (Psalm 19).

Now that's a healthy change you can bank on.

Generations . . .

This past week we were in Utah celebrating a seventh birthday. What was most notable was that there were four generations present: my mother, my sister, her daughter, and her granddaughter. When you see ninety-two years and four generations of family it gives you pause to think about all those who came before and those who will come after.

Every family has its share of famous and/or infamous characters in its lineage. One of our most notable was Elbridge Gerry: signer of the Declaration of Independence (yeah), Vice-President to James Madison (yeah), person accredited with creating gerrymandering (oops).

As I look at the youngest members of the family, I wonder what is in store for them? What mark will they make on their world or the world as a whole.

Since The Lost Generation was coined (those born between 1883-1900) each subsequent generation has been named and characterized by the world they would experience and influence: The Greatest Generation, The Silent Generation, The Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z, Generation Alpha, and now Generation Beta.

This latest group’s world will be characterized by AI, automation, and pervasive technology and many of this generation are expected to live into the 22nd century.

The Bible speaks a lot about generations too, but not in terms of the world and its effect, but of families and their effects. Generations are seen as “a continuum, emphasizing the transfer of faith, the enduring nature of God’s covenant across time, and generational accountability.”

One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your might acts.” Psalm 145:4

“Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD.” Psalm 102:18

“That the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children . . .” Psalm 78:6

It is fun to research which ancestors made a significant splash in the world’s pond and exciting to dream about what future descendants might achieve to better society, but the most important mark any family can make is to leave a lasting impression of God’s goodness and justice, be a living testimony of God’s grace and faithfulness, and teach the next generation of God’s love and commandments.

Colors . . .

My drive to the golf course this week took me past multiple shades of gorgeous greens, rows of golden daffodils next to white fences, and wispy white clouds spread across a gorgeous cerulean blue sky. (I looked up that last one to get the color exactly right. Pantone 15-4020 for you designers.)

If you are looking for colors, you can’t beat springtime. And if anyone needs evidence of God’s imagination and creativity, they need look no further than spring.

I have read that the human eye can detect over ten million colors, around a thousand light-dark levels, 100 red-green levels, and 100 yellow-blue levels. Amazing.

But what is more amazing is that science has also determined that since light consists of wavelengths, there is actually an infinite number of colors possible. Seems right in character for an infinite God.

God’s third act of creation was vegetation . . . and He declared it good. (Genesis 1:12)

And we know that He is good just by looking at that vegetation. We also know that he is God by what He created.

“. . . what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:19-20)

I have read about heaven and the streets of gold, the sapphires, rubies, emeralds and pearls. But if I am overwhelmed by the number of colors that my earthly eyes are able to detect and how much joy they bring me, I can’t begin to imagine the infinite colors I will experience in heaven.

In the meantime, I am going to soak up every bit of spring: the mild sunshine, the cool breezes, and, of course, the amazing colors. I hope you do too.

I do a lot — A LOT — of driving. Whether it’s around town running errands, checking in on or being with friends, going to golf tournaments throughout the NorthState, or visiting family, I am racking up the miles on my car.

As expected, sometimes I get tired of going hither and yon, and just want to stay put for a while, even if it is just for a day. And I worry about the number of miles I am accruing, the age of my car, and if it will hold up.

Though I wasn’t even thinking about my car issue the other day while doing my devotions, I came across a verse that spoke directly to these concerns. It was the very verse my sister-in-law had mentioned in a different context only months before, saying how a family she knew put this verse on the threshold of their garage as a daily reminder.

“The LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:8 (NIV)

And that is the crux of the matter, isn’t it? There is no way I will know what will happen or when it will happen, so thinking about it does exactly what Corrie ten Boom said: “Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.”

Psalm 121 is a wonderful reminder that God “will watch over your life” (vs. 7). He will “not let your foot slip” (vs 3). And an important one for those of us who experience 100+ degree summers— He “is your shade at your right hand (vs. 5). Most importantly, He “will neither slumber nor sleep“ ( vs. 4).

There is much I can do to avert car trouble — keep up with the services and rotate tires—but after that, my part is over. It is now all in God’s hands.

Corrie ten Boom also said, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

And once we embrace that we will experience the peace that Isaiah spoke of in Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (NLT)

And one more reminder from King David: “I will both lie down in peace and sleep; For you alone O Lord make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

Peace. God’s peace.
