Mothers and Sons . . .

I had read it multiple times. I had heard it read or referred to more than I can say. And yet . . . I had missed it.

Proverbs 31:1 “The words of Lemuel king of Massa, which his mother taught him:” (NLV)

This chapter was the advice of a mother to her son.

So why did I find this so important? Because, once again, we see God at work.

Biblical times were steeped in patriarchy. Women’s roles and influence were limited, but God always works outside of society's confines. In the Old Testament, Deborah was a judge and military leader. Esther courageously stepped in to save her people. Abigail wisely mollified a king bent on revenge because of her husband’s foolish words and actions.

After 884 verses of male wisdom, I guess I wasn’t ready to shift gears, but the advice coming from a mother to a son makes sense.

Multiple websites assert that a strong mother-son bond will help shape a son’s self-esteem and emotional intelligence as well as foster the ability to form healthy and fulfilling relationships. Mom’s are also instrumental in developing their son’s self-discipline, communication skills, respect for others, sense of responsibility, and resilience in the face of challenges.

And a mother’s influence never fades. The son in Proverbs 31 is a king, and his mother offers him this advice. First, in a culture that allowed kings to amass large harems and be involved with multiple women, “don’t.” Solomon, the wisest man ever, succumbed to this weakness, and he and his kingdom paid the price.

Second, don’t drink because a king needed to have a clear head. If under the influence, he might forget the law or go against the rights of the people. We also see that drunkenness did not work out well for King Elah. He was murdered while “drinking himself drunk” (I Kings 16:9 ESV).

Instead his mother tells him to do good, be fair and just, and stand up for those who suffer and are in need.

It is up for debate if verses 10-31, regarding what makes a good wife, was advice from his mother, but it is included in the same chapter, so one could make the argument that only a mom knows the kind of wife her son needs and what characteristics make up a godly woman.

Both parents are vital to a child’s upbringing, but just as the father-daughter bond is so important to the well-being of the daughter, so is the mother-son relationship to the son. God bless all the godly mothers out there.

The Super Bowl . . .

Another Super Bowl is in the books, and I have to confess. I didn’t watch it. Neither of my two teams made it so I really wasn’t vested in the result. However, that didn’t keep me from checking online to see what the score was every now and then. And, as we all know, the Super Bowl is more than just a game between two football teams. There is the competition for the best commercial, the coveted half-time show slot, and, most important of all, the Puppy Bowl. So, of course, I went online after the fact to check all of it out. Some were praiseworthy. Some controversial.

Since 1967, when the two conferences merged, the Super Bowl has been played to determine the ultimate champion. When it began to take on “super” status as a tradition, I’m not sure, but the tradition includes team attire, BBQs, snacks—lots of snacks—parties, and betting pools.

Some say we spend too much time and money celebrating athletes, and that is probably true, whether it is the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Olympics, or World Championships . . . but we should recognize an individual’s or a team’s accomplishments, just as we should in any venue: music, writing, science, etc. These are God-given gifts. These are people who have sacrificed and worked hard to make the most of their talents.

However, as one individual has commented, “The emptiness of sports is felt most in victory.” (Josh Becker)

And this brings us to the most important point. If victory, or being the best, is the only goal (in any venue), then it’s moment is fleeting, because immediately it is over.

BUT—if it is an opportunity to praise and glorify God, then it can have eternal value. I was gratified to see Nick Sirianni, coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, use his team’s victory on this national/international stage to give credit to God in his post-game interview. Not for the victory per se but for the talent He provided for the team.

Every achievement or win can be hollow if it is only for the glory of self. But if we truly cling to I Corinthians 10:31: “whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God,” then victories and achievements can fill us with joy and bring light to the world.

"Let your light shine among men that they may see your good deeds and give glory to your Father in heaven" Matthew 6:16.

Wisdom . . .

A Proverb is a short sentence based on long experience.  Miguel de Cervantes

I had never thought of that before, but it’s true, isn't it?

Sometimes it takes us a long time to learn a simple truth.

Some that have taken me way too long to learn the truth of are the following:

Actions speak louder than words.
Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

My journey to understanding has given me a new appreciation for King Solomon, the king who asked God for wisdom above riches. At the time he probably didn’t know what he was in for because I don’t think God gave Solomon any shortcuts.

There are approximately 800 individual proverbs in the book of Proverbs and except for Proverbs 30 and 31, all are attributed to Solomon. I am sure many of them came from his own life experiences, such as Proverbs 21:9: “Better to live on the corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.” After all, Solomon did have 700 wives and despite living in a palace, I am sure there were times even that wasn’t big enough.

Or “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” Proverbs 3:5.

Others, I am sure, were through his observations as King as he worked through the disputes and problems of his people.

  • Proverbs 6:6-8: "Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways, and be wise".
  • Proverbs 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath.”
  • Proverbs 13:24 “The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.”
  • Proverbs 22:7 “The rich will rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave of the lender.”

Though I have many years under my belt, I hope that I might learn more truths in the future just by internalizing the truth as presented through Scripture and not through wrong choices. The best way I can think to do that is by following the very first proverb Solomon wrote.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline” Proverbs 1:7.

My Mug . . .

I have sixteen mugs hanging below my cupboards in my kitchen. I like everyone of them. Some have been gifts and some I have purchased. Some are cute, some pretty, and all are special, and I have used every one of them for hot chocolate, hot water, or tea.

BUT . . . there is only ONE mug I use for my morning coffee. Why? Not because it’s pretty, because it isn’t. It is probably the least noticeable mug I own. No, it’s because it is the perfect size. It holds just the right amount of coffee I like with just the right amount of room for my frothed creamer.

And because it is the mug I want to use the next morning, I always wash it out after every use.

Which is why, when we sang a new song last Sunday, “The Blood,” the lyric “I’ve been washed from the inside, I’ve been washed from the inside out” really hit me. That is what God did through the blood of Christ.

Through the blood of Christ, and only through the blood of Christ, we are saved. Only He can wash us from the inside out.

BUT . . .

I take such care to wash my coffee mug out right after use—every morning. Why? So it is ready to go again. But do I do that with myself?

I may not be the smartest or prettiest or most athletic or most . . . anything . . . but I am a vessel God has designed “just right” for what He wants me to do.

Each morning I need to bow before my holy God, confess my sin, place my day in His hands, and fill my mind with His word. In other words, I need to be washed clean again. To not do so allows the grime and discouragement of this world and the unconfessed sin in my life to build up.

Though we are saved and have a place on God’s mug rack, if we do not come daily before the Lord to be washed clean, we could become unusable until such time as we submit to a good scrubbing.
